Live Graphic Recording

#happinessatwork is clearly beyond surveys. If work giving us joy, purpose,  elevation, & identity and if that happiness emanates in the stories, conversations & narratives at work,  that’s happiness at work.

Had an amazing evening at #linkedinlocalthane 8th Edition. Enjoyed #livegraphicrecording for the speakers

Embracing Polarities in current times

We are all currently oscillating in polarities – of that which is happening externally AND Internally, coping professional pressures AND  managing family time, cognitively overloaded with all the information that’s floating AND physically drained with uncomfortable work from home desk AND all the house work. There are opposing forces pulling at us and we are trying to find balance. All of us are experiencing complexity like never before. Truth is we have to embrace this flux.

Each of us have our own unique ways of coming to terms with this reality. Some patterns I see in social media posts include Gardening, mindful meditation, yoga & exercise, drawing, reading books, family time zoom calls, charity pics, throw back pics, cooking pics, what’s app forwards, memes, online learning certificates etc. To each his own coping mechanism. What has worked for someone may not work for the other.
The point I wish to make is please don’t get pressurised with the posts you see. If u choose to do NOTHING & if that’s your coping mechanism, perfectly fine. Sometimes self realisation can also emerge in the kitchen when washing vessels (btw this happened to me yesterday). So suit yourself with what works best for you.

I also see posts of people condemning others who post any of the above, but why? Let’s respect the fact that everyone is trying to cope up and embrace this ambiguous situation we are in. Let’s be empathetic & not judgemental. We are all seeing AND managing the dynamic tensions around us, yet embracing the newness of all that we are experiencing. Let’s acknowledge that someone is trying to make efforts to cope, let’s create space and hold each other please.

And just a last bit. Empathy in today’s reality are icons in your phone such as 🙌👏🤩💖🥳💪 Just use these on your friends posts, you will be making someone’s day & you will feel positive too when you realize that your friends are only trying to cope up! 😃

Use of Self in Graphic Recording

Often times I get asked different questions about Graphic Recording. Like “why do you do this”? ” Why this & why not something else”? “You are a Facilitator, OD practitioner, why this”? And some judgements make me faint like this one “This is not a thinking activity. You just need to be good at drawing”. Some of these questions or statements I recognize come from a sheer lack of awareness about this space. To me, it helps keep alive a lot of my OD Practitioner values & here’s how:

  1. Attentive Listening : As a live Graphic Recorder your work is completely dependent on Attentive listening. Constantly processing the information in visuals in a manner that aids sense making to your client & audience.
  2. Contracting with client needs: Understanding the client needs & setting clear boundaries of expectations. In this case the framework gets interesting with colours 🙂
  3. Presence : You claim your space with your Presence in Graphic Recording. It calls for a complete mind and body coordination. Being Fully there.
  4. Emergent Process: Like OD this is an emergent process. There are realities that emerge in the here & now and as a graphic recorder you need to be tune into that.
  5. Detachment from your creation: You create with so much passion. From the moment the creation is complete you detach. The creation belongs to the client from the moment its complete. You detach yourself with a hope that your creation will sustain in another system. By this I mean both the creative & the generative outcome of that process.
  6. Deep Diagnostics: This is linked to the contracting piece, like in OD. Your Graphic recording will only be as strong as the need analysis done.
  7. Feedback: You will get feedback from clients & if you are doing Graphic recording in open spaces like in conferences, then god bless you 🙂 Listen to all the feedback & process only that which makes sense to you & reaches to you as authentic.
  8. Whole System Thinking : Because you are processing and synthesizing information from everywhere. You are crystallising information for retention and action. You are enabling meaning making in large groups of people.
Having said all of these, yes there is a difference & overlap between Graphic Recording & Graphic Facilitation. In my head, this is an integration process. Working towards it. But for now, this is not about drawing, this is about thinking, processing, generating, meaning making 🙂

Build your Identity, not your Certifications

I was recently a part of a networking event. The regular introductions were going on. It was concerning to note how an individual spoke only and only about all his certifications as a part of his introduction. It was sad how his certifications seemed to be his only identity.

I often come across people pursuing certifications only because it’s a fad, because everyone else is talking about a topic or because of fear of being left out in the rat race.

My two bits on this, to acquire knowledge a certification is not necessarily the only medium. In some areas, expertise can be acquired only through professional certifications, there it’s a clear non-negotiable. However the flipside of it, after being certified if one is unable to apply the acquired knowledge & skills in his/her org. set up then it will soon be rusted.

Before pursuing any course/certification
I have personally benefitted by asking myself the following questions. Taking the liberty to share them here:

1) Is this a pull or a push for me?
2) What is the relevance & application scope of this certification in my context?
3) Is it connecting to my long term ambition/ purpose?
4) Is the investment worth the efforts both in terms of time & finances.

After finding your own answers for the above questions, reach out to people who have done these certifications/ courses earlier & get their perspectives, not on your decision but on the course.

As individuals can we allow ourselves to be defined through our values, our passion & our behavior. Please let’s not allow our certifications to become our identity.

Behavioural Intelligence

#122 Behavioural Intelligence
I have attempted to Visually capture the essence of a brilliant #TED talk by Jay Johnson on How to win difficult people through Behavioural Intelligence. To deal with difficult people he says it’s important to Change our own behaviour. It’s interesting how he points out that ‘labels’ that we give people are governed our own biases & filtering process. Separating the person & the situation helps us control our own behaviour & engage authentically with the person.
